In 1973, South Broward High school alum, Kurt Kotrady, was elected as Senior Class President. Not only was he a leader in school, but he also excelled in extracurricular activities by starting and leading the school's Sport Car club. In 1974, Kurt began his law enforcement career at the young age of 19 with the City of Sunrise. His dedication and hard work led to him becoming a member of the Broward County Sheriff's Department in 1981. Throughout his tenure, Kurt had the privilege of being selected for various units such as the road patrol, Motorcycle unit, Chiefs of police anti-racketeering unit, Gang task force unit, S.T.O.P. Unit for narcotic undercover work, Auto theft unit, and Juvenile Truancy unit. It was in the Juvenile Truancy unit where Kurt's innovative approach of picking up truants helped decrease home burglaries in the area, catching the attention of his district Chief and the Sheriff. Kurt's experience in law enforcement also included working in the Vice unit in an undercover capacity, as well as serving as a driver/bodyguard in the Dignitary Protection Unit. His exemplary conduct and trustworthiness earned him the confidence of the former Sheriff Nick Navarro. Outside of his law enforcement career, Kurt dedicated his time to serving his community. He became a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale, actively participating in the Christmas pageant and later becoming the lead security agent for the Pastor and his family. Kurt also volunteered for organizations such as the MAKE a WISH Foundation and the Broward County Humane Society, where he initiated a Security team to ensure safety within the organization. In addition to his community service, Kurt is a proud member of The Hundred Club since 2017, providing assistance to the families of fallen Firefighters and Law enforcement officers. Currently, he serves as a Greeter at the door entrance of Calvary Chapel church, welcoming attendees with warmth and kindness. Despite his busy schedule, Kurt always made time to be a loving and supportive father to his son, Jeffrey. His dedication to raising Jeffrey to be a gentleman and providing for him no matter the circumstances is one of Kurt's greatest accomplishments. Jeffrey followed in his father's footsteps, excelling in academics, getting married, and eventually becoming a Pastor, bringing immense joy and pride to Kurt. In his later years, Kurt found solace in his faith and started serving God, finding fulfillment and inner peace in his spiritual journey. Kurt's life is a testament to his unwavering dedication to serving others and making a positive impact in his community.
